Peter Sagan struggled during the stage 2 of the Tour de France 2012
After a terrific start to his 2012 Tour de France campaign, Peter Sagan was eyeing the stage 2 of the race.
The Slovakian marked his first ever victory at the Tour de France during the stage 1 of the race and overcame the mighty Fabian Cancellara.
He crossed the finish line in a quickest time of 4 hours, 58 minutes and 19 seconds and restricted the race favourites.
Tour de France prologue winner, Fabian Cancellara finished second and continued his overall dominance at the race.
Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky Procycling, Philippe Gilbert of Team BMC and Bauke Mollema of Team Rabobank occupied the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
The 22-year-old was expected to perform during the 207.5 kilometre stage 2 of the race but could not quite provide the desired results and had to settle for the sixth spot.
Mark Cavendish wins the race after a close encounter with Andre Greipel and bagged his 21st
stage victory at the Tour de France.
Sagan was disappointed after his stage 2 performances and briefed that he wanted to win but could not really perform to his capabilities.
"I wanted to win, but that's cycling. It was a very nervous race. In the sprint, I won only some points for the green jersey," Sagan said.
"Cavendish is strong. Also this sprint is for him... It was a big battle. This is the Tour de France. It's not like another race but it's good".
"I think I was behind Goss when the sprint started. Too far and I'm not fast enough for a sprint finish like this. It was too flat, nervous and also, in the sprint you need some luck".
Sagan is having a terrific season and has already filled his bag with as many as 14 wins in the earlier part of the season.
He bagged stages at the Tour of Oman, the Tirreno-Adriatico, the Three Days of De Panne, the Tour of California, the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France.
Sagan won the National Road Race Championships, finished second at the Gent-Wevelgem, third at the Amstel Gold Race, fourth at the Milan-San Remo and achieved the fifth overall position at the Tour of Flanders 2012.
He is now eyeing the coming stages of the race and is optimistic to restrict Mark Cavendish and Andre Greipel.
