Peter Sagan wins the opening stage of the VDK-Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde
Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas filled his bag with yet another victory towards the end of the first quarter of the year.
He rode brilliantly to win the opening stage of the VDK-Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde 2012.
The cyclist finished the gruelling distance of 201.6 kilometres in a fastest time of 4 hours, 33 minutes and 41 seconds to claim the top podium spot.
Jacopo Guarnieri of Team Astana finished second with Fabio Sabatini of Team Liquigas achieving the third spot.
Alexander Kristoff, Elia Favilli and Marcel Sieberg occupied the next three spots, in the respective order.
Sagan is enjoying a splendid season and has climbed the podium on four different occasions in the 2012 season already.
His first win came during the Tour of Oman, as the cyclist claimed the second stage of the race and also occupied the point’s classifications at the event.
The Slovakian also claimed stages at the Tirreno-Adriatico and the Three Days of De Panne and finished fourth at the Milan-San Remo 2012.
His most recent victory came during the Gent–Wevelgem. The cyclist gave his best during the race but could not overcome the mighty Boonen and had to settle down for the second podium spot.
"After the last climb of the Kemmelberg I was in a breakaway with Cancellara. I felt good but that was already the case in the Tirreno," he briefed after the race.
"It's better to try something then to do nothing at all. In the sprint Boonen was stronger".
Sagan is now eyeing the coming stages of the race and is optimistic to build up his lead for the coming days.
He grabbed 20 important points and is holding the top spot at the point’s classifications.
Jacopo Guarnieri, Fabio Sabatini, Alexander Kristoff and Elia Favilli are holding the second, third, fourth and fifth positions in the respective order.
Tosh Van Der Sande of Team Lotto Belisol succeeded during the first four, the sixth and the seventh mountains of the race.
Peter is now dominating the stage 1 classifications with a lead of four seconds over Jacopo Guarnieri, six seconds over Fabio Sabatini, seven seconds on Maciej Bodnar and ten seconds over Alexander Kristoff.
