Peter Sagan wins the second stage of the Tour of Oman 2012
Peter Sagan won the second stage of the Tour of Oman after a close finish during the 140.5 kilometre stage 2 of the race.
The Slovakian took a total time of 3 hours, 10 minutes and 44 seconds to reach the Wadi Dayqah Dam.
He overcame Baden Cooke and Tom Jelte Slagter to top the podium on the second day of racing in Oman.
Sagan finished 5thduring the opening stage of the race and claimed the 7th overall position before the start of the second stage.
Andre Greipel, Denis Galimzyanov and Tyler Farrar were the top three cyclists after the stage 1 classifications.
Peter’s remarkable performance during the second stage not only earned him a stage victory but also helped him to claim the top spot after the stage 2 classifications.
"It was a good finish for me but it's never easy to win, I went quite early because it seemed that the others were already starting their sprints. After that, it came as it came," Sagan briefed after the race.
Andre Greipel of Lotto Belisol Team dropped down to the second overall position and is now 4 seconds behind the race leader.
Baden Cooke of GreenEdge Cycling Team is further three seconds behind at the third position.
Cooke briefed after the race, "I jumped to the front with 300 to go. I was a bit over-geared but there was no way I was going to beat Sagan".
He continued, "He just came straight past me at about 280 to go. He's freakishly talented, so it's no disgrace to be beaten by that guy. He's capable of anything".
Belgian rider Klaas Lodewijck of BMC Racing Team claimed the first and the second sprints of the race and earned 6 useful UCI points.
Sagan is also leading the young rider’s classifications with the lead of 9 seconds over Tom Jelte Slagter after the stage 2 classifications.
Nacer Bouhanni, Tony Gallopin and Ramunas Navardauskas achieved the third, fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Team RadioShack-Nissan, Team FDJ-Bigmat and Rabobank Cycling Team are currently holding the top three positions after the team’s classifications.
Peter is now eyeing the 144.5 kilometre stage 3 of the race scheduled on Thursday, February 16th, 2012.
