Peter Sagan wins the third stage of the Tour de France 2012
It was not long ago when Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale registered his first Tour de France win which came during the stage 1 of the race.
The cyclist continued his splendid run of form and claimed the top podium position during the 197 kilometre stage 3 of the race.
He rode brilliantly during the stage 3 of the race and overcame Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky Procycling by a lead of 1 second.
Peter Velits of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step, Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Nissan and Michael Albasini of Team Orica GreenEdge occupied the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
The 22-year-old bagged his first Tour de France win during the 198 kilometre stage 1 of the Tour when he overcame Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Nissan.
"Of course people told me I was the favourite," said Sagan after the first stage.
"I knew that Chavanel would try something at the end. I wanted to attack at the hardest section. It was very very good that Cancellara was there”.
“I saw that he had strong legs. It was good to take it easy behind him".
The 22-year-old is having a terrific season with as many as 15 victories in his bag during the first half of the season.
He bagged stages at the Tour of Oman, the Tirreno-Adriatico, the Three Days of the De Panne, the Tour of California, the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France.
Sagan finished second during the Gent-Wevelgem, third at the Amstel Gold Race, fourth at the Milan-San Remo and finished fifth during the Tour of Flanders.
Sebastien Minard of Team AG2R La Mondiale wins the 119 kilometre Intermediate sprint of the race while Michael Morkov of Team Saxo Bank wins the first and the second mountains of the race.
Peter Sagan, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Wouter Poels, Tejay Van Garderen and Gorka Izagirre Insausti were the top five young riders on the day.
Fabian Cancellara is still leading the overall classifications and continued his 7 second margin lead over Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky Procycling.
Sylvain Chavanel, Tejay van Garderen and Edvald Boasson Hagen occupied the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
