Peter Sauber hails rookie driver Sergio Perez: Formula 1 News
Sauber’s team owner and principal, Peter Sauber, has praised the rookie driver Sergio Perez, saying that the Mexican has performed beyond expectations of everyone in the team. The 21-year-old driver pulled off a spectacular result in his debut Formula 1
race, at the Albert Park, Melbourne in Australia. He finished the race in the seventh spot, but was later disqualified from the race due to a technical infringement by his team.
Sauber stated, “We knew that in Sergio we were getting a quick, young driver. Even so, with a rookie you never have a guarantee that he will be able to call on his full potential under the pressure of a race weekend. I had high expectations of Sergio, and
I have to say that so far he has actually exceeded these.”
The Swiss further added, “I'm in no doubt that Sergio will maximise his huge potential step by step. The critical factor here is that he feels comfortable within the team and has an environment which helps him to develop as well as possible.”
Sauber also praised Perez’s team-mate Kamui Kobayashi, who has impressed one and all since his introduction in Formula 1. The Japanese driver has played a crucial part in increasing the performance level of his team, working hard with the engineers and giving
them a lot of feedback.
According to Sauber, Kobayashi and Perez work well as a team and they benefit a lot from each other.
Sauber-Ferrari is currently placed at number six in the constructor’s championship with seven points. All points have been scored by the Japanese driver, who is tenth in the driver’s championship after three races.
This is an impressive performance for the team until now, as they have outpaced the likes of Force India and Williams Cosworth. However, the most important thing for the team will be to continue their form and consistency in the ongoing season.
Sauber was ahead of Mercedes before the Chinese Grand Prix, but the German giants bounced back strongly in the third race of the season. Their drivers Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher finished in points and matched the pace of the front-runners, Red Bull,
McLaren and Ferrari.
