Peter Schaefer given tryout with Vancouver Canucks
He was once a Vancouver Canuck, and if everything works out, Peter Schaefer will have a legitimate chance at becoming one again.
The veteran forward is attempting to revive his National Hockey League career with the Canucks, who are among several favourites to win the Stanley Cup this season.
The presence of Schaefer’s name on the training camp roster surprised many, as the 33-year-old native of Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan has not been active since being bought out by the Boston
Bruins on 30 June 2009.
Schaefer was originally drafted by Vancouver 66th overall at the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, and spent parts of three seasons with the team until 2000-01. After playing with TPS of the SM-liiga
in Finland in 2001-02, Schaefer was traded to the Ottawa Senators for defenceman Sami Salo the following season.
The 6ft, 187lb left-winger played in Ottawa for four seasons, and was traded to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Shean Donovan on 17 July 2007. This came a year after Schaefer had a career
season with the Senators. In 2005-06, Schaefer scored 20 goals and 30 assists for 50 points in 82 games. He added five points (1G, 4A) in five playoff games that season.
Schaefer’s production declined while he played for the Bruins. He only managed 26 points in 63 games (9G, 17A) during the 2007-08 season. In the following season, Schaefer failed to crack
the Bruins’ roster, and was soon placed on waivers. Once he cleared waivers, he played with the Providence Bruins, Boston’s American Hockey League affiliate.
During his junior career, Schaefer made a big splash. His best season came in 1996-97 with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League. He put up 49 goals and 74 assists in 61
games for 123 points. He once scored three shorthanded goals in one game, which became a WHL record that still stands to this day.
In 556 NHL games, Schaefer has scored 98 goals and 161 assists for 259 total points.
