Peter Schaefer placed on waivers by Vancouver Canucks
Sportsnet.ca reports that the Vancouver Canucks have announced that winger Peter Schaefer has been placed on waivers. Schaefer joined the team after a productive try-out.
He was invited to join their training camp, and was ultimately rewarded with a one-year, two-way contract valued at $600,000.
Schaefer has played in 16 games with the Canucks this season, notching only two points (one goal, one assist) in that span. Originally drafted by the Canucks 66th overall at the 1995 NHL
Entry Draft, Schafer played for the team until the end of the 2000-01 season. He was traded to the Ottawa Senators for defenceman Sami Salo after spending a season in Finland, and was traded again to the Boston Bruins for Shean Donovan in 2007.
Schaefer addressed his situation in a recent interview with
The Vancouver Sun after he was a healthy scratch.
“That’s the million-dollar question, isn't it?” Schaefer said when he was asked if his time with the Canucks might be over.
“For me, I still think I can play. I’ve played out of position, but that’s not an excuse. I knew coming in this would be a deep team and I could have different roles. It might be one night
in, one night out, right wing, centre – whatever it is, I’m willing to accept that role.”
Vancouver may call up another player from their American Hockey League affiliate to fill Schaefer’s spot on their roster.
Schaefer posted his best offensive totals in 2005-06, while playing for the Senators, scoring 20 goals and 30 assists for 50 points in 82 games. His production tailed off after being traded
to Boston, and he was soon placed on waivers. Schaefer went on to play the remainder of the season the Providence Bruins, Boston’s AHL affiliate.
The 33-year-old native of Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan has played 572 games in the National Hockey league, during which he scored 99 goals and 162 assists for a total of 261 points.
