Peter Schmeichel tips Pep Guardiola to succeed Alex Ferguson at Manchester United
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel suggests that Pep Guardiola would be a good choice to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson when he decides to step down as manager of the English Premier League club.
Although Fergie will turn 69 at the end of this year, the Scot recently revealed that he has no intention of retiring from the position he has held for 24 years.
However, the former Aberdeen and Scotland manager will leave the role one day and speculation remains ever-present over who will be his successor.
Names such as Everton's David Moyes and Sunderland's Steve Bruce have been frequently mentioned in the Press as potential candidates, while Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho would also be a strong contender.
However, Schmeichel, who won the UEFA Champions League and five EPL titles with United, suggested that Barcelona head coach Guardiola would be capable of taking up the job despite his relative lack of experience.
He told the Daily Mirror that: "With all due respect to Guardiola, it is difficult to compare him to Ferguson because Fergie has created so many good teams over so many years. But I do like Guardiola's style a lot. I have been to see Barca train and I saw how
well things were going there with all 25 players working with smiles on their faces.
"He seems very assured and transmits a lot of confidence to his players and does not interfere much from the bench. He lets them play and I like coaches like that."
Guardiola took over as Barcelona boss when he was promoted from his role as coach of the B team in 2008.
In his first season in charge, he guided the club to the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Champions League. 2009 also saw him add the Supercopa de Espana, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup to his collection as he helped Barca become the first ever club
to win six trophies in a calendar year.
