Peter Senior a man to watch this week at Byron Bay
Peter Senior is the man to watch for this week’s Byron Bay bash. Why would not he be? He is the oldest person to have won the Australian Open—just two weeks ago.
For those of you living under a rock, the 53-year-old Peter Senior shot an even-par 72 in the last round of the windswept, The Lakes Golf Club, stealing the trophy from runner-up Brendan Jones by a single shot.
Brendan Jones’s dream for an Australian Open win was in tatters. Despite stormy conditions threatening (which actually had organisers vote to sit out three hours of game play), Senior maintained the kind of top form that would make many a younger player
green with envy.
The golfing community went all “hurrah” of course, because the Australian’s win on Sunday goes a long way to dispel certain uncertainties older players harbour.
Especially when they are pitted against much younger rivals who can simply drive the ball further than they can.
Never counsel your fears, so Senior tells them.
Well, the field is all set for a week of intense golf. Defending Champion Ian Baker-Finch will be joining him. Baker-Finch has also been the winner of the 1991 British Open. Terry Price, another name of note, will also be taking to the field.
Price’s greatest display has been on this year’s European Seniors Tour, where he has been the only Australian to clinch a title.
Peter Fowler’s name makes the list also. Fowler has incidentally been a TV commentator at the last Australian Open.
Besides them, professional golfers Mike Harwood, Rodger Davis, Noel Ratcliffe, and David Marriman will also be participating in the 54-hole event.
A $45,000 top prize is up for the taking by any of the 70 professionals who can blast their way through Ian Baker-Finch’s defense or Peter Senior’s formidable reputation this season. Play at the Nor East Legends Tour Championship will be from December 18
to 20, 2012.
Tournament Director Mark Wilson added, “The course is in outstanding condition at the moment and it will be set up to ensure there are plenty of birdies for one of golf’s outstanding spectacles”.
“Where else can you see PGA Professionals with more than 300 Tour wins amongst them in the same place at the same time, not to mention in an atmosphere like no other?”
