Peter Tomasulo wins United Leasing Championship in the playoffs
Peter Tomasulo parred the fourth extra hole in the sudden-death playoffs of the United Leasing Championship, to register the third Web.com Tour victory of his career, on Sunday, July 1, 2012.
Tomasulo got off to a solid start and carded four birdies on the front nine of the Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh.
However, he failed to maintain consistency on the back nine and carded two bogeys to settle for a two-under par 70.
His performance on the 18th hole proved to be a disappointing one. Earlier, he had a one-stroke lead that he lost with a bogey after he hit his drive into a greenside water hazard. His overall score at the end of the four rounds was 11-under par 277.
"It was a terrible swing," Tomasulo said. "I thought my caddie was going to jump in the water he was so mad. I told him all we have to do is make birdie with the second ball. I knew I had to make birdie, so I stepped up and hit the same club".
As a result, he was forced to enter the playoffs with David Lingmerth, who already had an 11-under par tournament score.
Yet, he managed to record pars on each of the four holes against Lingmerth’s three pars and a bogey.
Overall, it was a great victory, considering the fact that he was recovering from different injuries for the last 21 months.
"This is the first time in a long time that I've felt really healthy," Tomasulo said. "It's a lot of fun being back out here. I miss being out here and playing. This feels great. It's a blast being out here and competing again. I really didn't expect to
play well this early".
At the end of the tournament, Lingmerth looked really disappointed as he had a great chance to record the first Web.com Tour victory of the season.
He told that he was more of unlucky in the tournament, especially when his birdie putt on the second extra hole slid past the cup.
He now plans to take the positives out of the tournament and apply them in the upcoming events on the tour.
