Peter Torebko hits back at Carlos Gomez-Herrera to reach round two – Banja Luka 2012 CH
German challenger, Peter Torebko, bounced over the Spanish qualifier, Carlos Gomez-Herrera, in a three-set thriller at the Banja Luka 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He summed up a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 success against the 22-year-old to labour into the round of 16 at this outdoor clay court event.
Torebko made a drastic start and gifted away the opening set. However, he made a spectacular comeback and not only grabbed the equaliser but prevailed in the final set to pluck the match in one hour and 51 minutes.
Gomez-Herrera thundered into the Bosnian stadium. He unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to wipe out opening four games. Apart from losing the following four games consecutively, the qualifier remained calm and got the break though in the last game, eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to four.
The 24-year-old turned the tables on Gomez-Herrera in the following set. After the Spaniard held his opening serve, Torebko went on a six-game killing run. He brushed off the lone breakpoint he encountered and capitalised on three out of five break chances to pull out the equaliser with a breadstick.
Ranked 222nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Torebko maintained his intensity in the final set. He got the critical break in the third game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. The German brushed off all four breakpoints he faced to keep his entire serves. He broke the Spaniard’s serve again in the last game and clinched the decider with a 6-2 score line.
The Polish-born Torebko committed more double faults but smacked eight aces to neutralise the effect. He manipulated a poor first serve share of 40 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 53 per cent but tremendously marked 25 out of 32 points on it.
Next challenge for Torebko is his second seeded compatriot, Bjorn Phau. The German veteran dusted away late resistance to triumph over Croatia’s Dino Marcan in straight sets to set up this duel. He was broken twice but cashed in half of the six break chances to formulate a 6-4, 7-6(6) success.
