Peter Torebko thrashes out Morgan Phillips in 1st round – Madrid Challenger 2011
German tennis pro Peter Torebko demolished Brit Morgan Phillips 6-1, 6-0 on Tuesday to book his place in the second round of 2011 Madrid Challengers here in Madrid, Spain.
Entering the Challengers tournament as a qualifier, Torebko looked in commanding form in a match that lasted for only 42 minutes on the red clay courts of Madrid. Showing his aggressive intent throughout the contest, Torebko smashed
his big forehand and backhand winners all over the court to put his opponent under extreme pressure.
Using the hit and volley technique to great effect, he surprised the challenger every now and then to earn cheap points. Breaking the serve at regular intervals, he did not allow his rival to breath. Serving brilliantly, he fired
8 serve aces in the match. Hitting 75 per cent first serve, he was able to take control of the rallies. Executing the passing shots brilliantly, he forced errors from his opponent.
Ranked 302nd in the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings, Torebko showed great composure on the court. Using his foot work very effectively, he was able to get to even some of the difficult balls. He will be
hoping to continue his impressive run to claim his first ever ATP title. However, to achieve similar results against other quality players at the competition, he must maintain his current level of play.
Converting five out of seven break points in the match, he made most of his opportunities. Not allowing a single break chance to his opponent, his defence was as good as his attacking abilities. Securing 58 per cent of the points
on Phillip’s return, he established complete control over the contest.
Starting the match very aggressively, he broke the serve in the very first game of the opening set. Holding on to his service games with ease; he did not let his opponent settle in the match. Dropping only a game in two sets, he
completed a thumping victory to move ahead at the tournament. Phillips needs a lot of improvement in almost all areas of his game to do well in future fixtures.
