Peter Uihlein maintains his lead at the Kazakhstan Open after round two
Peter Uihlein maintained his position on top of the leaderboard, midway through the second round of the Kazakhstan Open, at the Zhailjau Golf Resort in Almaty.
The former World Number One Amateur got off to a poor start and conceded a bogey on the second hole.
As a result, he moved three strokes behind the clubhouse leader, Alexander Levy, who carded a five-under par 67 to set the target at an 11-under par score.
Uihlein then parred the next five holes prior to draining two straight birdies to end the front nine.
He earned another two shots on the 13th and 15th hole and once again surged to the top of the leaderboard.
However, he failed to maintain the sole lead, as he stumbled on the 18th hole for the second bogey of the day and was forced to share the first position on the leaderboard.
While talking to the European Tour’s official website, he stated that he was really disappointed with his finish on Friday. He miscued his bunker shot on the 18th hole and found the greenside water hazard for a penalty stroke.
He now plans to prove the second day as the worst round of his campaign in Kazakhstan and record the first professional victory of his career.
“I caught my wedge heavy from the bunker on the 18th and it went in the water,” he explained. “In a four round tournament where you’re going to have a lot of birdies, you might have a round where it’s a bit flat and I'm hoping today was my flat round for
the week”.
“I didn’t hit my short irons particularly well today,” added the former US Amateur Champion. “I pulled it on the second for my bogey. I had chances after that and didn’t take them but I drove the ball well so I gave myself opportunities. I just didn’t hit
it close enough today”.
According to him, the course is really easy to play on.  Therefore, one can create a number of birdie chances during the week.
However, putting will play a key role in recording low scores, as it can be the only difference between getting close and winning the tournament.
