Peter Uihlein takes home the prestigious Madeira Islands Open title – Golf News
Peter Uihlein joined the European Tour’s winning circle by claiming his maiden title at the Madeira Islands Open, courtesy of his four-under par score in the final round, on Sunday, May 19, 2013.
At the end of the third round, the European Tour rookie was trailing the overnight leader Mark Tullo by just one stroke. The final round witnessed him making a poor start, as he bogeyed the very first hole that he played. Yet, it did not shake his confidence and he bounced back strongly with birdies on the third, fourth and the seventh hole.
Thereafter, he conceded two more bogeys on the eighth and the ninth hole to lose another two shots, which took him back to an even-par score.
Overall, it was a shaky start by the American. However, it appeared as if Uihlein had proper planning for the back nine, as he birdied four of the remaining nine holes, without making any mistake, to finish two strokes better than Tullo and Morten Ørum Madsen.
The game could have entered the sudden-death playoffs, as Madsen was sharing the lead with Uihlein entering the 18th hole. However, he faltered for a double bogey, allowing Uihlein to take home the prestigious title.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, the American star expressed his pleasure in recording a victory in his rookie season on the European Tour.
“I’m just thrilled,” he said. “To do it playing well on the back nine, coming down the stretch, is sweet. I know Morten played a heck of a round and Mark played really well so it was nice to come out on top.”
“I just knuckled down I guess. It was all putting that did it today, I was just trying to free up and they started to roll in so it was nice,” he added. “I hit some good putts coming down the stretch. I’m just delighted to have won.”
According to him, his decision of starting his professional career on the Challenge Tour and the European Tour has really paid him off, and he is happy to record his second top-five finish of the season.
