Peter Uihlein thrashes Jin Jeong for a convincing win in Georgia Cup – Golf news
The reigning US Amateur Champion, Peter Uihlein, defeated British Amateur Champion, Jin Jeong, with a four-hole lead on the 16th hole at the Golf Club of Georgia, situated at the Lakeside course in Alpharetta. With this win, Uihlein will now get
a chance to play in the upcoming Masters at the Augusta National, a dream relished by amateur golfers all around the world.
“I’m looking forward to next week,” Uihlein said in an interview. “It’s nice to get a win and get the competitive juices flowing. It certainly helps.”
The 21-year-old, Uihlein, gained an early control of the match, maintaining a lead from the beginning. He led by four holes by the end of front nine and missed a chance to finish the match at 15th, when his approach from fairway, fell three feet
short of the hole. Young Uihlein is the son of Wally Uihlein, the chief Executive of a golf equipment manufacturing company, Acushnet, which also manufactures the famous Titleist brand.
A junior at Oklahoma State University, he became the fourth Oklahoma State player to win the US Amateur Championship last August by defeating Stanford’s David Chung. He defeated Chung by 4 & 2 on his 21st birthday at Chambers Bay, in University
Place Washington. Uihlein was nominated twice as the ‘Player of the Year’ by the American Junior Golf Association, and joined the list which includes Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
Later in 2008, Uihlein struggled with his form and decided to go back to attend college at the Oklahoma State University. He resurfaced at the 2009 Walker Cup where he posted a heroic 4-0 to help US team lift the cup. He went ahead to win the Dixie Amateur
cup next year to become World number one Amateur Golfer in May 2010. Born in Massachusetts and raised in Florida, Uihlein, when asked about his whereabouts often used to say, “I say I’m a hybrid. I root for all the New England teams, the Red Sox, Patriots,
Celtics. But I feel like I grew up in Florida, so I say I’m from Florida. I’ve picked up more of a Southern accent, I think.’’
Other Georgia Cup winners include Danny Lee (2009), Ryan Moore (2005), Ricky Barnes (2003), Sergio Garcia (1999) and Matt Kuchar (1998).
