Peter Uihlein’s birdie blitz allows him to surge into contention at Madeira Islands Open – Golf news
A birdie blitz on the front nine of the course allowed Peter Uihlein to climb 37 places, having started his second round campaign at the Madeira Islands Open, to surge into contention for the top spot on the leader board, on Friday, May 17, 2013.
Uihlein fired an amazing eight-under par 64, despite finishing his round on a low note, as he bogeyed the 15th and the 16th hole at the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra course.
He started his second round campaign with four birdies in a row, followed by securing another two shots on the seventh and the eighth hole, which allowed him to finish the front nine with a six-under par score.
After carding birdie-eagle-birdie, starting from the 10th hole, he went 10-under par for the round, and was likely to hit the magical number 59.
However, the cold weather conditions later in the evening affected his game, and failed to add more shots to his scorecard. Yet, he still managed to finish just one stroke behind the leader, Craig Lee.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, the 23-year-old American expressed his pleasure in making a strong surge on the leader board, despite the fact that the playing conditions were really difficult in Madeira.
“It was really fun,” he said. “I hit it well, I putted well and the first 12 holes were pretty special. It was just drawing out perfect. You have a game plan and you just execute it and that’s all it was in those first 12 holes.”
“There were some really hard holes on the way in and it got very cold at the end so I'm glad to be done. Today I just tried to put a little more focus on my scoring clubs and really put the ball in the right spot on the greens,” added the son of Walter Uihlein
– CEO of major golf equipment manufacturer Acushnet.
Lee, in the meantime, carded a four-under par 68, to take the lead, before the bad light forced the game to suspend at the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra course.
