Peter Whiteford in good form, continues to lead Avantha Masters after second round - Golf News
Scotland’s Peter Whiteford retained his lead in the second round of Avantha Masters, at the DLF Golf and Country Club, after he shot a four-under par 68 on Friday, February 17, 2012.
Whiteford was sharing the lead with Spaniard Alejandro Canizares after the opening round of the tournament.
However, Canizares failed to hold on to his lead and fell to tie for the 17th at the end of the second round after he shot a one-over par 73.
On the other hand, Whiteford continued his good form and carded five birdies and a spectacular eagle against three bogeys to finish two strokes ahead of Thailand’s Prom Meesawat on top of the leaderboard.
He said that he was struggling on the course early in the morning because of cold weather. However, he warmed up a little and went back on the course to play some good shots.
"It was freezing cold this morning and it's a lot harder. But once it warmed up a bit I started to play a bit better and gave myself a few chances. I had a good eagle on the sixth (his 15th) which kick-started me a bit to finish well," Whiteford said.
"I hit a driver and a six iron and then holed a good putt, about 30 feet across the slope. It gave me good momentum and I was disappointed not to finish with a birdie. I hit two good shots to be just short of the green," he continued.
"Then I produced a 20-handicapped chip and putt, so had to settle for par there," he said.
He added by saying that it was not a good way to finish his round. However, he also did not consider it a disaster. The only thing he wanted was a birdie which he failed to make in the end.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Chapchai Nirat, Kieran Pratt and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet were all at seven-under par overall score to tie for third on the leaderboard.
The defending champion, SSP Chowrasia, again failed to impress his fans and finished at level par to tie for the 43rd in the end.
Shamim Khan and Anirban Lahiri were the top-listed Indians on the leaderboard to finish in a seven-way tie for the seventh with six-under par overall score.
