Peter de Villiers’ future as Springboks coach to be decided in 2012 - Rugby News
Peter de Villiers, the head coach of South African Rugby Union team, will remain at his post until the end of 2011 and the new boss of Springboks will be announced after his recent tenure ends with the current year. The ongoing contract for De Villiers will
come to an end on December 31 and until then he will carry on with his responsibilities. This statemnt was made by chief executive South African Rugby Union, Jurie Roux, on October 11. Roux told the media that De Villiers, along with his assistants, will continue
their jobs as per their contracts.
Peter de Villiers was reported to have quit from his duties after his team was knocked out by Australia in the quarter final of Rugby World Cup 2011. Later on, the stories were rubbushed by the head coach and he clarified that he will abide by his terms
with South African Rugby Union (SARU).
De Villiers was made the head coach of Springboks in 2007 when the world cup winning coach, Jake White, resigned from the position. De Villiers has secured a number of successes for his team in the last four years and was determined to make his side the
first team of the world to win back to back rugby world cups but his goals were shattered by the Wallabies on October 9.
Talking about the appointment of a new South African coach, Roux stated that the union will make the decision after the end of the current year. He added that, “The formal review of the 2011 season and the process of making appointments for 2012 will only
be concluded towards the end of the year, as was decided by the executive council in July.”
Roux also appreciated the services of De Villiers and said that he has tried his level best to make the Boks one of the best sides of the world. He added that, “This has been a dramatic and ultimately heart-breaking season and, on behalf of Saru, I would
like to thank Peter de Villiers, John Smit and the rest of the players and management for the effort, dedication and sacrifices they made in our Rugby World Cup campaign,”
Jurie Roux expressed his disappointment over his teams’ failure to make their place in the semi-final of global tournament.
