Peter de Villiers interested in coaching the Springboks again - Rugby News
Peter de Villiers, whose current contract with the Boks as head coach is coming to an end with 2011, has expressed his desire to carry on the responsibilities until next Rugby World Cup. Talking to journalists on November 4, he said that leaving the side
without winning the Webb Ellis Trophy is something frustrating for him.
De Villiers has broken the silence first time about his coaching career after his side was knocked out from quarter-final stages at the hands of Wallabies. However, South African Rugby Union will make the final decision regarding his reappointment at the
end of this year.
Peter de Villiers took over the head coach’s responsibilities after the departure of World Cup winning coach, Jake White, back in 2007 and proved himself a good successor for at least three years. Unfortunately, he found himself in troubled water just before
the start of Rugby World Cup 2011, as a large numbers of his players sustained various injuries.
As many as 23 of his preliminary RWC squad players were unable to participate in Tri-Nations Cup held few a weeks before global show. The Boks won just one game after four outings in the tournament and finished at the bottom of the tables.
Later on, during the largest event of the year, his side made a good comeback to retain their winning form and won all their group matches. Yet again his men fell too short against the rusty Wallabies in the playoffs and packed their luggage back to home.
In his talks with Supersport on last night De Villiers said that, “Not winning the World Cup makes me feel like there is unfinished business, that the story isn't finished. I made a lot of mistakes along the way, but you learn from those mistakes, and I
believe that I have learned sufficiently that if I was to get a chance to do it again, I wouldn't make those same mistakes again.”
He added that, “If I apply and my application is not accepted that is fine, I will accept what is good for South African rugby and move on. The next coach will have my full support.”
South African Rugby Union has postponed the matter of appointing new coach until the end of 2011.
