  1. If Peter's talking "hope", it has to be "less hope". "Fewer" can only be used with the plural "hopes".

  2. To be grammatically correct -

    (1) Peter's hope faded as the days went by.

    (2) Peter was less hopeful as the days went by.

    Hope I've helped.

    ;p

  3. less - hope

    fewer-hopes

fewer must be used with plural, sweetie!

  4. less - you can't count 'hope'.

If you can count it, use fewer. If you can’t, use less.

The American Heritage Dictionary says that less is used with plurals that indicate a unit, such as distances (less than 150 miles), periods of time (less than twenty minutes), and sums of money (less than two hundred dollars). Note that most words following fewer are plural (fewer apples, calories, books); most words following less are singular (less fruit, weight, knowledge).

  5. Is this a grammer question?

Use fewer if you write:  Peter had fewer HOPES as the days went by.

Use less if you write:  Peter had less HOPE as the days went by.
