Peterson Crisanto and Jack Robinson prevail in Round 1 of Billabong ASP World Junior Championships
Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto and Australia’s Jack Robinson claimed perfect result in their respective heats during Round 1 of Billabong Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Junior Championships Gold Coast that went down on Saturday, January 21, at Burleigh Heads in Gold Coast, Australia.
A convincing win in the fifth heat moved Crisanto straight into Round 3, whereas Australia’s Mitchell Parkinson finished in runner-up place, consequently getting relegated to Round 2. America’s Kalani David also joined the Round 2 line-up due to his failure to show up for the heat.
Robinson advanced through into the third round as well after clinching the win in the sixth heat. South Africa’s Dale Staples finished in second place, whereas Brazil’s Caue Wood rounded out the third position. Both the surfers were consequently forced to face a trip to relegation round.
With two-to-three foot waves and a sunny weather prevailing at the primary event site on the opening day of the competition, the fans expected nothing less than a dose of thrilling surfing action.
The fifth heat surely did not fall short of their expectations as the event wildcard entry Crisanto treated the crowd to a phenomenal performance, getting the better of Parkinson and David in the process.
As the battle got underway, Crisanto got off to a humble start, collecting a series of decent scores before beginning his charge in the final minutes of the heat. He locked his first business-wave to unload a series of exquisite manoeuvres, earning 8.00 points for the effort and immediately followed it up with an even more impressive 8.33-point wave to finish with a decisive heat-total of 16.33 points.
Parkinson, another wildcard entry, put on a remarkable fight throughout the entirety of the man-on-man battle, but fell short of securing first place after finishing with a heat-total of 14.43 points, which comprised of a 7.33 and 7.10-point wave.
David constituted the original fifth heat line-up, but failed to show up for the heat, therefore getting relegated to the second round.
The sixth heat saw Robinson, yet another wildcard entry, take an excellent come-from-behind win to advance through into the third round.
The Australian surfer got off to a modest start, scoring 3.73 points off his first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat. Staples, on the other hand, got off to a solid start and posted a 6.17 on the score-board off his first wave.
As the heat progressed, Staples added another 5.80 points to his account to take his heat-total of 11.97 points, putting his competitors under greater pressure. Just when it seemed that the South African was going to claim the win, Robinson caught a juicy wave and pull off a series of impressive tricks on it. The effort earned him a decisive 8.60, taking him to a heat-total of 12.33 points and thus sealing the fate of the heat in his favour.
Wood failed to make much of an impact during the three-man battle and finished in third place after finishing with a heat-total of 8.73 points, which comprised of a 4.60 and 4.13-point waves.
The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships Gold Coast is the third and final event of ASP World Junior Tour and will determine the men’s and women’s 2011 ASP World Junior Champion.
