Peterson Crisanto and Keanu Asing advance to Round 3 at Australian Open of Surfing – Surfing News
Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto and Hawaii’s Keanu Asing advanced to the third round (Round of 48) in men’s division at the 6-Star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Australian of Surfing on Thursday, February 16, at Manly Beach in New South Wales, Australia.
Crisanto earned his place in the next round by prevailing in the 20th heat of Round 2 (Round of 96), while Australia’s Matt Wilkinson also extended his life in the competition by finishing second. Australia’s Stephen Walsh and Jack Freestone failed
to make the Round 3 cut after finishing in third and fourth place respectively.
Asing’s place in the third round was confirmed after his win in the 21st heat. Australia’s Perth Standlick also advanced through to Round 3 after finishing in runner-up place, while Hawaii’s Tanner Hendrickson and America’s Patrick Gudauskas rounded
out the third and fourth place respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
Crisanto adjusted exceptionally well to the two-foot waves on Thursday and made use of the sunny and windless day to put on a spectacular show for the crowd. He caught his first business-wave halfway through the heat to post an 8.00 on the score-board and
later backed it up with an 8.57-point wave to finish with a decisive heat-total of 16.57 points.
Wilkinson’s surfing was nothing short of impressive either as he selected two relatively juicy waves to earn a 6.83 and 8.07 off them and thus secure runner-up place.
Walsh and Freestone finished with a heat-total of 12.67 and 11.77 respectively. While the effort was not a lacklustre one, it just wanted enough to see them through into the next round.
The 21st heat turned out to be really intense as Asing and Standlick competed hard for top honours. The Hawaiian posted a 5.77 on the score-board off his first business-wave, but Standlick edged past him with an impressive 7.83-point wave.
As the heat progressed, Asing took the lead with an 8.20-point wave and held on to it firmly. Standlick failed to back up his first-wave score with another solid score and eventually conceded victory to the Hawaiian after finishing with a heat-total of 13.73
points, 0.24 short of the required score.
Hendrickson and Gudauskas scored a heat-total of 10.94 and 9.33, consequently failing to make the Round 3 cut and getting eliminated.
The surfing action continued at Manly Beach with the remaining Round 2 heats of men’s division at the Australian Open of Surfing.
