Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech, has admitted that the Blues are still reeling from their failed bid for the Premier League title. The London club’s final hope of retaining their crown was extinguished after a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford
earlier in the month.
That match proved to be the title decider, as the win allowed United to open a six point gap at the summit of the Premier League standings. The Red Devils were never going to throw that away in their final two games, and they have since earned the point
they needed to win the Barclays Premier League crown for the 2010/11 season.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Chelsea faithful, especially after they had seen their team come so close to pulling off one of the biggest comebacks in Premier League history.
The Blues were fifteen points adrift of Manchester United at one point in the campaign. But by the time the two clubs lined up for the match at Old Trafford in May, United’s lead had been whittled away to a mere three points. A win for Chelsea on that day
would have taken them to the top of the league, and would probably have seen them through to the title as well.
However, it was not to be, and the Blues will now have to come to grips with the fact that they are going to end the season with no silverware.
The disappointment from that defeat at Old Trafford seems to have carried over into Chelsea’s final home game of the season. That match against Newcastle United finished in a 2-2 draw, as the Blues failed to find the form that saw them take 25 points out
of a possible 27 in the last few weeks of the season.
Petr Cech believes that he knows why. Speaking after the match, Cech said, “It seemed to me that in each of us there was still disappointment from not winning the title, as on Saturday Manchester United captured it. We wanted badly to win the last match
of the season at Stamford Bridge and conceding in the last minute is not the best way to reward our fans, who have supported us all year.”
He added, "It somehow sums up our season in the way that there was always something missing for us to finish the job."
Chelsea are currently in second place in the Premier League standings with 71 points.
