Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech believes that his teammates need to take a long hard look at themselves after their Champions League quarter-final defeat to Manchester United.
The shot-stopper claims that the players are as much to blame for their failed season as the manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Chelsea lost 3-1 on aggregate to Manchester United, losing both legs of their Champions League quarter-final tie. Their exit from the tournament has seen their last remaining hope of silverware vanish completely, and it looks like Chelsea will have to endure
a rare trophyless season.
It is only the third time this has happened in owner Roman Abramovich’s eight-year reign, and on both previous occasions, the Russian opted to dismiss the manager.
There have been speculations that the current Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti is also destined to meet the same fate, but goalkeeper Petr Cech claims that the Italian should not have to take all the blame for his side’s poor season.
Speaking in the wake of Chelsea’s Champions League exit, Cech said, “We win together, we lose together. We are in the same boat and we try to guide the boat to the harbour as safely as possible. It's disappointing, always, if you are a part of a club and
you don't win a trophy all season.”
The Blues got off to a flying start to the ongoing 2010-11 campaign, but they have failed to build on last season’s domestic double.
Chelsea are currently 11 points behind leaders Manchester United in the Premier League standings, and with only a few games left to contest, the Blues are well and truly out of the race for the title. It has left Petr Cech wondering where it all went wrong.
He said, “After winning a double last season, everybody thought that we were going to defend the titles. We had a good start to the season and then the season became difficult but we were doing well in the Champions League until those two games against Man
United.”
Chelsea are currently third in the Premier League table with 58 points.
