Petra Cetkovska outfoxes Kateryna Bondarenko in the final qualies – Cincinnati Open 2011
Czech Petra Cetkovska bounced back from a set down to secure a spot in the main draw of the Cincinnati Open 2011 by outplaying Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko on hard courts of Lindner Family Tennis Centre, Mason, Ohio. 26-year-old
Cetkovska won the last two sets with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory in under 2 hours.
The first time the two players had met was in Birmingham, Great Britain on grass courts during the quarterfinal in 2008 where Bondarenko won in straight sets of 7-6(3), 6-2.
Bondarenko opened the set with an ace; however, in the next few minutes she struck 2 line faults and struck another 2 net balls during the set, while her opponent struck only 2 foot faults.
Bondarenko was feeling her confidence and was able to attain 62% in her total service points along with, 42% in her total returns points which enabled her to bag 55% of her total set score.
On the other hand, the Czech, who was only able to win an above average 58% win in her total service points but because of a poor return she was unable to score good and with 10% fewer points lost the set.
The Ukraine did not allow a single break point opportunity to her opponent as she was able to save both her break points on her serve and was able to break her opponent once, which gave her the advantage she needed and hence, won
the set.
By the end of the first set the Czech had taken a severe beating and therefore, learned her lesson. She did not think of losing the second set and because of a consistent performance in her serve was able to achieve a 55% win in
her total service points.
Cetkovska thread the needle by brilliantly hitting sharp angled replies that won her 75% win in the second return but because of an average score in the first return she was only able to bag 52% of her total return points and by
accomplishing 40 out of 75 points Cetkovska won the second set.
The third set was the determining set of the match and neither of the players wanted to lose but because Cetkovska wanted vengeance she put in a little more effort than her Ukrainian opponent, who failed to conquer Cetkovska.
The 26-year-old Czech was able to smash her opponent psychologically as she clogged a commendable 69% win in the total service points, along with an exceptional return which won her 56% of her total return points, and thus bagged
a total of 64% of the total set points.
Moreover, she restricted her opponent to only one game and saw a comprehensive victory with almost twice as many points as Bondarenko’s.
