Petra Cetkovska upsets Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round – New Haven Open 2011
Another big surprise for the tennis fans at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Connecticut, United States, as the world number 13, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, crashed out of the second round battle
against the 40th ranked Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic, at New Haven Open at Yale.
In the Tuesday afternoon’s contest being played on the hard courts of Connecticut, the Czech qualifier displayed her amazing talents to overcome the fifth seed Radwanska in a three-set thriller. Cetkovska laboured for two hours
and twenty four minutes before settling the final scores at 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, to make her way to the quarter-final round of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Series event.
It was the 40th victory of the running year for Cetkovska and the third straight one against the Pole competitor. The Czech defeated Radwanska earlier this season in the round of 64 of Wimbledon Championships and her
most recent victory made her record 3-0 against the Pole.
Cetkovska took hold of the game early but the fifth seeded Pole made a brave comeback in the second set to keep the contest on even terms. However, Cetkovska proved to be the worthy contestant in the final set and forced her way
to victory by taking down her opponent with ease.
The 26-year-old Czech coughed 11 double faults in the matchup, with seven of them coming in the second set alone, but skilfully compensated for it by reeling off 50 out of 69 first serve points in the contest. Her serve was broken
on three different occasions, while she converted five of her eight break opportunities to come out as the winner in the end.
Radwanska dropped the opening set early but manoeuvred her way back in the game by striking two break points to clinch the second set. Cetkovska turned the tables on her in the third set with three cracking serve breaks to finish
off the contest at 6-3, moving into the quarter-finals of the tournament, where she will face either Klara Zakopalova or the fourth seeded French, Marion Bartoli.
