Petra Kvitova “I hope that Sam will win some matches for me” – Tennis News
World number six, Petra Kvitova, is gutted to not avail such a marvellous opportunity for repeating the heroics from the last year. She picked up a viral illness on her way to Istanbul and couldn’t play her natural game against
the third seed Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, in her first Round Rubber clash. On Wednesday, she decided to pull out of the tournament and allow the ninth seed Aussie star, Samantha Stosur, to make an official appearance in the WTA Championships. She is just
22-year-old and will definitely get a lot more chances for playing at the most esteemed Istanbul arena, however, the unfortunate exit is definitely very painful.
In an interview after the retirement announcement, Kvitova said, “On Tuesday, when I played I thought I was nervous, but normally nerves are gone after the first set, and it was actually happening during the entire match. I was
shaking throughout the match and wasn’t feeling very well. My stomach felt funny. After one rally with Agnieszka I couldn’t breathe. So I thought there was probably something wrong.”
She further added, “I’m really sad to withdraw from the tournament. It’s a great tournament and it was an honour to be here. I hope I can come back next year again. I don’t like to give up, so I’m really disappointed. I hope that
Sam will win some matches for me.”
It is always a tough decision to quit such an elite tournament after working so hard throughout the season to qualify for that. Kvitova was reduced to tears in her match against the 23-year-old Pole because she failed to open up
and play her natural game due to illness. She has ended the season with two titles; winning the Rogers Cup at Montreal and following up with a stupendous run in the New Haven Open at Yale.
Last year, Kvitova won the Wimbledon Championships and stunned the world. She followed up with another stupendous victory at the year-end finale as well. However, she failed to carry the momentum to the next season. Now, she is
focused to gain some momentum earlier in 2013 that will help her revive superb run of form that yielded her the Player of the Year award in 2011.
