Petra Kvitova and her dream season 2011 – Part One
Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova had a flawless season and she completed it by triumphing in the WTA Championships, a final event that takes place between top eight players. She turned out to be the best among the top WTA stars of
2011. Eyeing for the number one spot, the sparkling Czech won a Grand Slam, four WTA titles and the WTA Championships this season.
Ranked number two in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Kvitova is currently standing on a 100 percent winning record for her last ten matches. She displayed brilliant skills throughout the season and her hard work paid off
as the Czech began the season outside top thirty and ended the season standing at world number two.
The high spirited Czech started her 2011 journey at Brisbane WTA International event in January and after losing just a single set, she breezed to triumph her first WTA title. Ranked 34th in the tournament, Kvitova crippled
German Andrea Petkovic with a breadstick in the final to get all the lime light.
Despite losing in the opening qualifying round at Sydney, she re-ignited her spark to make a quarter-final berth at Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam event. Kvitova upset fifth seeded Aussie Samantha Stosur and twenty-second
seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta on route to final eight. However, she fell to second seed Russian Vera Zvonareva in straight sets.
Jumping sixteen spots in the rankings, the Czech went on seven games rampage which included her second title of the season at Paris WTA Premier event. She trashed Slovaks Dominika Cibulkova and Daniela Hantuchova in the Fed Cup
and then went on to stun the top seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters in the final in Paris to triumph the title.
Despite her awesome performances, Kvitova fell to a three match losing streak. She snapped out from it in Miami but found her winning ways in the Fed Cup match against Belgium. The Czech wiped out Yanina Wickmayer and Kristen Flipkens
easily and carried her winning ways to the next tournament, Madrid WTA Premier, she entered.
Ranked nineteenth at Madrid, the first tournament of the clay season, Kvitova upset second seeded Zvonareva, sixth seeded Chinese Li Na and fourth seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka to lift her third title of the season.
"We know each other's games well. Today it was about being more aggressive and I was the first," Kvitova said. "I'm so happy to win the tournament and be in the Top 10 at the same time. But it's just a number and I want to improve
my game - I don't just want to be Top 10, I want to keep getting better and better."
Even her opponent praised the Czech by stating, "Petra showed some great tennis today."
By hitting 40 amazing winners, she outclassed her 21-year-old fellow and lifted her biggest career title. This victory led her to the top ten for the first time in her WTA career. In addition to this, she joins world number Caroline
Wozniacki as the only player to win three year-to-date titles.
