Petra Kvitova back for her title defence in Wimbledon after a year – Tennis News
It seems just a couple of weeks ago that a left-hander from Czech Republic beat all the odds to lift her first ever Grand Slam title at the most elite platform in the tennis world, the Wimbledon Championships. 22-year-old Czech tennis ace, Petra Kvitova, was the stunning winner who lifted the Grand Slam title last year in London and she is all ready to begin her title defence in this year’s edition.
Kvitova was the first player ever to have born in 1990’s and winning the Wimbledon crown last year. It was really an achievement of sorts, depicting her rise to the top of her career in a short span of time. However, she has been struggling with her physical fitness since her mammoth triumph last summer, fighting a number of niggling injuries throughout this season as well. Kvitova hasn’t really carried on her winning roll after the Grand Slam victory and is still to end her title drought this season.
The 22-year-old is very optimistic for her title defence in London and believes her prolonged practice sessions will yield her glory in the end. Her form in the WTA clay court season has been very ordinary and she has openly stated that she likes faster surfaces to play tennis. Grassy courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon will certainly assist her game play and she might repeat her sublime run of the last season to lift another Major trophy.
"In the Czech Republic I practiced only on very fast surfaces indoors, and outdoors on the clay," Kvitova said to the press reporters. "My first game on the grass was when I played the juniors - I'm not really sure which year it was. I remember I won in Roehampton and then lost in the round of 16 in Wimbledon juniors. It was nice to play on grass for the first time and have such good results already. I saw I had a good game on grass with my lefty serve and aggressive game."
Kvitova has a shocking start to this year’s WTA grass-court swing and suffered a first-round exit at from the AEGON International tournament in Eastbourne last week. She was expected to perform her heroics at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament but her lack of practice couldn’t let her last the opening round. The Czech number one is currently ranked at number four in the world and it is anticipated that she will reach at least the fourth round of the tournament without any difficulty.
