Petra Kvitova battles past Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-final – Rogers Cup 2012
World number six, Petra Kvitova, bounced back a set down to oust the eighth ranked Dane, Caroline Wozniacki, in the semi-final of the Rogers Cup at Montreal. She clinched the win in three-sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; dumping the former
world number one in an hour and 53 minutes.
Kvitova started off with a serve hold and so did her rival. However, the Czech starlet couldn’t hang on to her second serve game and went down to a trail of 1-2.
Wozniacki continued to stamp her authority by registering easy serve holds and that frustrated her Czech age-fellow and dismantled her confidence as well.
The left-handed Kvitova dropped another breakpoint in the fifth game and drowned to a trail of 1-4. She failed to win any point on her opponent’s serve that piled up a trail of 1-5 in the opening set.
With a little cameo from the Czech starlet, the lead of the Dane’s superstar was lessened to 3-5. However, a breakpoint for Wozniacki ended the set in her favour and hinted at a technical upset.
The comeback from the Czech was worth applause. She powered down the 22-year-old Dane with two successive breakpoints that mounted a lead of 5-1.
Kvitova just allowed a mere serve hold in the remaining two games of the set to equalize the set scores and more importantly build some momentum before entering the final set.
Wozniacki lost her serve in the opening game of the final set and went down to a trail of 1-3 before losing another breakpoints and witnessing a monumental task ahead of her to save a match.
Kvitova led the scores 5-2 and the swap of breakpoints ended the encounter in her favour.
In the post-match interview, the Czech stated about her upcoming opponent, "I like her as a person. She's really funny. We've played each other three times and I'm losing - so I have to win tomorrow to have revenge and make it
2-2. She's playing great tennis here; I will try my best."
Kvitova was commenting about the former French Open Champion, Li Na, who will face her in the final showdown.
