Petra Kvitova bounces back to defeat Samantha Stosur in semi-final – WTA Championships 2011
It was a tad bit difficult for Petra Kvitova to take out Australian Samantha Stosur in the semi-final match of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011, though the Czech followed through and eventually made it into the final match of the event.
The two took up the gauntlet on indoor hard courts of the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey. After two hours and five minutes current Wimbledon champion Kvitova bounced back from a set down to secure a victory of 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 against current US Open Champion Stosur on Saturday the 29th of October 2011.
The first round of the match was initiated by Stosur, who was also the seventh seed for this tournament. She got off to a bad start and endorsed a breakpoint to her adversary, who then held her serve and reeled of straight to games t o place herself on the scoreboard at 2-0.
In the following five games the players managed to hold their service games, however, in the sixth eighth game Kvitova double faulted, while Stosur closed the deficit at 4-4. In subsequent two games the players again held serve and the score once again tied at 5-5. Eventually in the last two games Kvitova once more double faulted and gifted the opening set to Stosur.
After taking a beating in the first set, Kvitova pulled up her sleeves and capitalized on an early break in the third game to take a mini lead of 3-1 in the fourth game. The players again held their own and it was in the ninth game that Stosur once again double faulted on her serve and handed over the set to Kvitova.
By the end of the first two sets the players had managed to bag a set apiece and initiating the third set was Kvitova, who this time skilfully squandered two successive games to place herself on the scoreboard at 2-0. She further increased her lead by capitalizing on a second early break in the fourth game and the score had shifted to 4-0 and then 5-0 as she held her serve.
In the last four games Stosur tried to make a comeback and even capitalized on a breakpoint but alas! Kvitova restricted her adversary to only three games and sealed her victory of the set and the match.
In doing so; the debutant managed to reserve a spot in the final where she will be facing either fourth seed Victoria Azarenka.
