Petra Kvitova breezes past Yanina Wickmayer to reach last eight – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Eighth seeded Czech Petra Kvitova breezed past nineteenth seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer with a bagel at Wimbledon Championships 2011, a Grand Slam event held in London, United Kingdom. She blew away any doubts of her form in
this event by registering a 6-0, 6-2 success over the Lier native on Monday.
The Czech downed the expected successor of Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, Wickmayer in straight sets in three quarter of an hour at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. After earning this straight set victory, Kvitova blasted
the Belgian away for the third straight time and took the lead in their head-to-head series by 4-3.
Ranked eighth in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Kvitova stormed past Wickmayer by unleashing barrage of winners from her racquet. She reeled off all six games in a row to pocket a bagel in just eighteen minutes. The Czech
faced no problem at all and converted three out of five breakpoint opportunities to her advantage. To sugar coat the set further, she registered a perfect win on her first serve share of 43 percent.
21-year-old Belgian made a semi-final berth at US Open 2009 but her form has dipped since then. However, she raised her form this year and made quarter-final berths at Paris, Charleston and s-Hertogenbosch. On her way to the fourth
round here, she upset twelfth seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round but regardless of clobbering a higher first serve share in this match, Wickmayer blew her chance to shine.
After Wickmayer held her opening serve, Kvitova went berserk again to strike out next three games, extending her lead to 3-1. The Czech then extended her lead to 5-2 after converting the second breakpoint opportunity to her advantage
and after facing a brief obstacle on her serve in the eighth game, Kvitova overcame it to clinch the set with a 6-2 score line.
The Czech is in top form this season as she displayed flawless performance to win titles at Brisbane, Paris and Madrid. She also made final berth at Prague ITF and Eastbourne before entering this major grass court event at SW-19.
Her awesome performance was seen on her route to fourth round as she triumphed over American qualifier Alexa Glatch, British Anne Keothavong and twenty-ninth seeded Italian Roberta Vinci all in straight sets.
Up next for the 21-year-old Czech is Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova who stunned former world number one, Venus Williams in straight sets to reach this spot.
Thirty-second seeded Pironkova sealed the deal in seventy-five minutes to overpower the twenty-third seeded American with a 6-2, 6-3 score line at the Centre Court.
