Petra Kvitova cements her fifth place in the rankings – Tennis News
Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova has further strengthened her fifth ranking after some strong performances recently. The Czech star has increased her gap over Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who is at the sixth spot right now.
Kvitova defeated Maria Kirilenko of Russia in straight sets 7-6(9), 7-5 in the final to capture the New Haven title last week.
This is the Czech player’s second title win in three weeks. She toppled Li Na of China to grab the Rogers Cup crown in Montreal two weeks back. She would have completed hat trick of titles but she was beaten by Kerber in the semi-finals
of Western & Southern Open.
Talking to the reporters after her New Haven Open final, Kvitova said, "It's unbelievable - I played three tournaments in a row and won two. I've played a lot of matches and I'm feeling more relaxed and confident on the court.
I hope all of this will continue into the US Open next week."
Kvitova had almost lost the opener against Kirilenko in the final but she saved a set point and went on to win a marathon tie-breaker.
She stated, "In the tie-break I just played point by point - I wasn't thinking about the score," Kvitova said. "In the end it was pretty close and I'm really glad I won it. After that, I was down physically, without energy. It
seemed like I was walking, not running.”
Seeded fifth in the draw, Kvitova is slated to meet Polona Hercog of Slovakia in the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open.
Kirilenko failed to win the title but she gained her best ranking with this performance. The Russian beauty overtook Ana Ivanovic and Dominika Cibulkova to reach the 12 position. Kirilenko will start her Flushing Meadows campaign
against South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers.
Top four players are unmoved in the WTA Rankings, as Victoria Azarenka, Agnieszka Radwanska, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have secured their places.
On the men’s side, Roger Federer is at the top, followed by Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and David Ferrer on the top five positions.
