Petra Kvitova comprehensively dumps Sara Errani in the semi-finals – New Haven Open 2012
Former world number two, Petra Kvitova breezed past the Italian, Sara Errani, in straight sets to lift her second WTA championship title of the season on Friday. The Czech number one took approximately one hour and six minutes
to undo her rival in a one-sided final of New Haven Open at Yale at 6-1, 6-3.
The Czech wild card entrant won her first serve and confidently grabbed the first three games in succession, shooting the scores to 3-0. The 25-year-old leisurely picked pace and just managed to secure a game in the middle
of the initial set. However, this was the only game she managed to pull off in the entire opener.
Errani seemed vulnerable in front of flawless powerful serves of her opponent and she fired one ace and never double faulted. She had an average serve precision of 53, capturing four of eight first serve points. Kvitova smashed
three aces with no double faults. She maintained a first serve percentage of 50, converting eight of 10. She was not able to attain any break points in the opening set.
The following set witnessed a similar format, as the 10th ranked Italian star was unable to sustain her first serve. The 22-year-old Czech took a clever move and capitalized on the advantage, racing
to a 2-love lead straight away. The right-handed Italian was unable to overcome the might of the Czech and her performance was considerably weak. Nonetheless, she tried to equalize the scores and upset her rival. Towards the end, Kvitova effortlessly nailed
a serve break and won the last three games, claiming the set by 6-3.
The former world number two gave a solid performance and fired five aces without committing a double fault. She had an average first serve percentage of 59, and bagging 12 of 13 points on it. However, Errani had a reasonably
high first serve percentage of 77, converting 19 of 33 first serve points. The Italian tennis professional got eight break point opportunities and she clamped two of them in the closing set.
The two top-10 tennis stars have encountered each other twice in the past. In the last encounter, Kvitova defeated the former world number nine in straight set of 6-4, 6-3 in the Fed Cup held earlier this season.
The Czech tennis ace is drawn in a match against the seventh seeded Maria Kirilenko in the final round of the tournament.
