Petra Kvitova defeats Tamira Paszek in the quarter-finals – Rogers Cup 2012
Fifth seeded, Czech number one, Petra Kvitova defeated the Austrian youngster Tamira Paszek, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup, held in Montreal, Canada. The sixth ranked Czech secured a comprehensive victory
over the underdog opponent to book a place in the semi-finals of the coveted hard court event in style.
The match started with Kvitova securing her early serves to take off nicely in the first set, making it two-love lead. As the game picked up momentum, both players faced a series of break points. Kvitova then attained a lead
of 4-1, breaking the confidence of the Austrian tennis professional. The first set then ended up in Czech’s favour, as she wrapped up the opening set with 6-3 lead.
Kvitova took the win by securing a handful of aces during the match. She had 67 percent first serve rate in the initial set and second return point score of 48 percent. Paszek conceded four double faults in the match at the
critical points and this gave her rival the opportunity to bounce back and win the game.
In the second set Paszek’s serve was broken by Kvitova right in the beginning. The Czech tennis ace maintained a transcending impetus from the start of the set. She also had a higher break point conversion rate than Paszek.
Overall, she won a total of 61 percent, while Paszek on the other hand just secured 38 points.
Kvitova will be competing for her first major title this season. Previously, she contested for the world number one rank, earlier in January but failed due her continual losses and finally landed to world number six. She
is drawn against the former world one, Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals of the Montreal Masters. After the absence of the leading tennis aces from the tournament, the Czech can surely compete against the Danish tennis professional.
Nonetheless, the semi-finals will be an interesting encounter of the event as the players have equalized each other’s wins the previous match by 3-all. Kvitova needs to maintain an aggressive stance for the upcoming matches
because her performance is facing a declining trend.
