Petra Kvitova disposes Flavia Pennetta with a quick fire in third round – London Olympics 2012
World number six, Petra Kvitova, showed no respect towards the 30-year-old veteran Italian, Flavia Pennetta, and thumped her away in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 to reach the quarter-final stage of the London Olympics on Wednesday.
It was like there were no holds barred by the Czech beauty starlet. She absolutely rocked the show and brutally put aside the 19th ranked Italian. Pennetta was passing some sarcastic smiles in the midst of the first
set; probably she realised what was coming her way. She mostly witnessed the ball sail past her before she could reposition for a return.
Kvitova was invincible and started off with a cracking serve hold; coupled it with the first breakpoint of the match and marched on to take a lead of 3-0 with a serve hold to love. Pennetta hardly managed a serve hold before she
faced three back-to-back winners from the Czech starlet that drowned her to a trail of 1-4.
Only a miracle could have saved the Italian veteran on Wednesday because the way Kvitova was playing, it looked like a match-up between a college player and a professional. She was powering down winners at her will and placing
the ball where she wanted with utmost precision.
The first set ended in a flash that hardly witnessed a successive rally won by the 19th ranked Italian. Trailing a set down and seeing her opponent playing some tremendous shots, Pennetta looked a bit heartbroken and
started the second set on a low note.
Kvitova won the first breakpoint in the opening game; held her serve in the following with a little pressure and won another breakpoint on the trot to build a lead of 3-0. She lost just one point on her serve to take the scores
to 4-0. Pennetta lost another breakthrough and despite holding her opponent in the following game, she failed to win a breakthrough and keep the match alive.
Kvitova commented afterwards, "It was really tough out there compared to what the score suggests. I think Pennetta played well and we had tough games - she has had a great tournament here. But I used my power and that was the key
today. It was the first match I've played very well here."
Next up for the left-handed hard hitter from Czech Republic is the 14th seed Russian superstar, Maria Kirilenko, who looks to be in a great touch after a long time.
