Petra Kvitova does not expect to win at the French Open – Tennis News
Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova has revealed that she does not have any expectations of winning the Roland Garros title.
The fourth seed stated this after reaching the round of 32 in the women’s singles event of the French Open. The Czech said this despite easily toppling her opponents in the first two matches, er hopes for lifting gold in Paris
are not high. Kvitova dropped just three games in her opening round contest, crushing Australia’s Ashleigh Barty 6-1, 6-2. She thrashed Urszula Radwanska of Poland in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in the second round.
Kvitova shared, in the post match press conference, "I don't have any expectation. I know that last season was great for me, and it will be very tough to have similar results as last year.”
The Czech had an amazing last season, when she captured six titles, including the Wimbledon and WTA season ending championships.
The 22-year-old started 2011 with victory at the Brisbane International by beating Andrea Petkovic in the final. After that, she added Open GDF Suez and Mutua Madrid Open to her tally of titles. Kvitova entered the list of elites
by stunning Maria Sharapova in straight sets 6-3 6-4 to win the Wimbledon crown. The Czech ended the year in style, as she won Generali Gruppe title and the season ending championships.
She added, "I know this season will be very tough with the pressure and with everything else. But I just would like to improve my game and be focused in every practice, every match."
Kvitova had started with her highest world ranking of two but so far she has failed to win even a single title in this season. Playing her first tournament of the year, she was beaten by Li Na in three sets 1-6 7-5 6-2 in the Apia
International Sydney semi-final.
The Czech lost to the then world number four, Sharapova, in three sets 6-2 3-6 6-4 in the semi-final at the Australian Open. The she faced an embarrassing loss at the hands of USA’s Christina McHale, ranked 35th at that
time, in the round of 32 of BNP Paribas Open. Kvitova lost to comeback player, Venus Williams, in the Sony Ericsson Open second round.
The Fulnek, Czech Republic resident failed in reaching even the title match of any of the three clay court tournaments she played. She was surprised by Lucie Hradecka and Angelique Kerber in the round of 32 of Mutua Madrid Open
and quarter-final of Internazionali BNL d’Italia respectively.
Kvitova will face world number 109, Nina Bratchikova of Russia, in the third round.
