Petra Kvitova dumps Julia Goerges to enter the quarter-finals – Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2013
Czech number one, Petra Kvitova, crushed the local hopes in the second round of Porsche Tennis Grand Prix by dumping Julia Goerges on Thursday. The fifth seeded left-hander took two hours and 16 minutes before she could wrap up
the three-setter at 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2, to reach the quarter-final round of the WTA clay-court tournament in Stuttgart, Germany.
These contenders first met in Linz, Austria, in 2010 and the German beauty, Goerges, stunned Kvitova in straight sets. The Czech tennis ace avenged her loss last year at Fed Cup ties and her Thursday’s victory gave her a 2-1 lead
in the head-to-head series against Goerges. She has already won a WTA championship title earlier this season and bidding highly to claim the trophy at Stuttgart as well.
Kvitova was off to a sloppy start in the opening set and suffered two early blows from the German diva to fall at 1-4 in no time. She made her attempt to turn the tables on Goerges by breaking her serve in the sixth game but the
home favourite came back very strongly in the very next game to reinstate her lead to 5-2. She closed the first set at 6-2 to get the upper hand in the contest.
The following set began with an exchange of break points from both sides. A regular game followed with the two divas holding their serves comprehensively to keep moving on even terms. After the score got dead locked at 6-6, a tie-break
came into play. Kvitova struggles desperately to stay alive in the competition and managed to sneak a mini-break towards the end of the decider. She claimed the second set at 7-6(4) and levelled the set scores to one-all.
Goerges had a steady start in the decisive set but suffered a terrible slump later. She suffered two successive break points from the Czech number one, who flew to a commanding lead of 5-2. Kvitova convincingly served out of the
match at 5-2 and booked a spot in the round of eight.
The second seed Chinese, Li Na, will face Kvitova in the quarter-final round.
