Seventh seeded Czech Petra Kvitova fended off early resistance by the Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues to earn a straight set victory at the Rogers Cup 2011, 122nd edition of the Canadian Open held in Toronto or Montreal,
on Wednesday. She registered a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over the 29-year-old Spaniard to secure a third round spot.
The Wimbledon Champion, Kvitova continued her impressive ways in this event and triumphed over Spanish number one in one hour and thirty-seven minutes. She last met Garrigues at Paris and maintained her winning composure to extend
lead in their head-to-head series by 2-0.
World number seven, Kvitova stormed into the opening set at the Rexall Centre and warned the desiderated break in the very first game. Despite losing her edge in the proceeding game, she broke the more experienced Garrigues’ serve
again to take a 3-1 lead. To her demise, she lost her serve again in the following game and after keeping her remaining serves, the Czech dragged the set to a tie-breaker. Kvitova prevailed in it to bag the opener with a 7-6(3) win.
She coughed several errors and four double faults but covered it up by smacking five powerful aces. The Czech also clobbered a lower first serve share of 57 percent as compared to Garrigues’ 65 percent but registered an impressive
66 percent win on it. Above all, she saved five out of six breakpoints conceded but capitalised on one out of seven breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
21-year-old Czech raised the bar of her game after the Spaniard held her opening serve in the second game of the final set. She unleashed her true form to wipe out next three games in a row. Kvitova then held her remaining serves
to clinch the set with a 6-3 score line.

breakpoint chances to her advantage to win comfortably.
The Fulnek resident will next face eleventh seeded German Andrea Petkovic who trashed Hungarian qualifier Greta Arn in straight sets to reach this spot.
23-year-old German showed amazing defensive skills after saving fourteen out of seventeen breakpoints faced and cashed in on half of the ten breakpoint opportunities to her advantage. She eventually sealed the deal with a 6-4,
