Petra Kvitova eases through Sara Errani to reach the semi-final draw – Australian Open 2012
As it was already anticipated, the in-form world number two, Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic, cruised through the quarter-final clash of the Australian Open against the unseeded Italian, Sara Errani, on Wednesday. The second seed
Czech took one hour and 51 minutes of play to register an emphatic straight sets, victory with the identical scores of 6-4, 6-4.
A huge crowd at the splendid Rod Laver Arena witnessed another display of sheer power and class from the world number two. The crafty left-hander rocked the day with her elegant forehand smashes to assert her authority over the
Italian underdog in style. Errani gave some tough time to Kvitova at times but her inconsistency in the contest couldn’t allow her to take the better of the mighty Czech opponent.
“In the beginning I was a little nervous because I knew everyone was expecting it would be easy. It was probably in my head," Kvitova said. "Sara was playing very well, too - she had to be, because she won all the matches before.
I just tried to be focused on every point, nothing around except the shot I'm playing. I had to wait for the right time to go for winners. That was the key today. I didn't play stupid. I tried to play like I really have to play.”
It was a pressure game for Errani, since the Italian has never gone past the third round in a Grand Slam event and she eventually crumbled down by the anxiety on Wednesday. Despite of spilling 44 unforced errors in the match, Kvitova
kept sailing through the games to take the better of her bewildered opponent. The second seed suffered four out of 11 break point conversions from her opponent but retaliated with six cracking serve breaks to take hold of the momentum.
Errani got some winning impetus in the second set and raced away to a 4-1 lead, courtesy to Kvitova’s errant game play but the Italian couldn’t hold on to her lead and the world number two went on for a five-game killing spree
to close out the contest at 6-4.
Kvitova will feature her Wimbledon opponent last year, the ravishing Russian, Maria Sharapova, in the semi-final round of the Grand Slam Down Under on Thursday.
