Petra Kvitova flashes past Bethanie Mattek-Sands – Hopman Cup 2012
Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova assisted her country to break into a lead after crushing United States’ Bethanie Mattek-Sands with a breadstick at the Hopman Cup 2012. The Czech super star registered
a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the American at this mixed exhibition tournament, which is held on the indoor hard courts in Perth, Australia.
World number two, Kvitova, outshined the American, ranked 55 in the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, in their third encounter. She not only maintained her winning record but also let
her country one step closer to the top of Group A in this exhibition tournament.
Czech number one stepped on the indoor hard courts with conviction and held her opening serve. Later she unleashed her true colours and after breaking the American’s serve twice, Kvitova bagged the
opener with a 6-2 win. She was all over the court and blocked all breakpoints she faced.
Last year’s Wimbledon titlist, Kvitova, kept momentum sailing into the final set and broke Sands’ serve twice to go 5-1 up. She then held her serve once more and earned a breadstick. The Czech produced
a higher first serve share and took full advantage of the several unforced errors Sands spilled. She also cashed in two break chances and dusted away all breakpoints she came across.
Tomas Berdych is up next from the Czech Republic who will face Mardy Fish of the United States. After this, a mixed doubles match between both countries will take place. Kvitova will team up with Berdych
while Sands will pair up with Fish. If the Czechs dominated in this series, they will top the Group A.
In their last round Robin match, top seeded Czech Republican team overpowered the Bulgarian team by 2-1 on Monday. Kvitova downed Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets and Berdych battled past Grigor
Dmitrov in a three set thriller. Czechs lost in the mixed doubles but won the series by 2-1 against Bulgarians.
In the third Round Robin match, the Czechs will face the Danish team of Caroline Wozniacki and Frederick Nielsen. Danes won their opening Round Robin match against the Americans but lost to the Bulgarian
duo of Pironkova and Grigor Dmitrov.
