Petra Kvitova gusts away Shuai Peng to reach the last eight - Western and Southern Open 2012
World number five, Petra Kvitova, easily booked a berth in the quarter-final of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio at the expense of the 32nd ranked Chinese star, Shuai Peng.
Straight sets 6-2, 6-2 victory for the 22-year-old Czech starlet in just 54 minutes must have boosted her morale that will help her extend the recent good run of form.
Both these players faced each other at the second round of London Olympics as well. Peng put up a better show that time; forcing the Czech to win the match in three-sets.
However, it was not the case on the eve of Thursday as the fourth seed Czech reined supreme over the 26-year-old Chinese in all departments of the sport.
Kvitova was right on money from the start of the match; winning four out of five points contested on Peng’s serve to earn a breakpoint and coupled it with thumping four winners to take the second game.
She won the second breakpoint of the set in the fifth game and mounted a gigantic lead of 4-1 before building it further with another commanding serve hold.
The Chinese looked out of form at the contest; couldn’t settle into the atmosphere and the early breakpoint for her opponent lowered the concentration and confidence of her as well.
She only managed to hold serve once more before the Czech star banged in a scintillating winner to end the opening set in her favour.
The second set wasn’t good at for the Chinese superstar as well. She lost the breakpoint in the opening game and went down to a trail of 0-3 after witnessing her opponent bagging another breakthrough in succession.
Kvitova just sprayed on bad shot in her serve before building a comfortable lead of 4-0. It looked like the bagel was on the cards but the 26-year-old Chinese held her serve to escape an embarrassing moment.
There were no more breakpoints contested in the match that helped the Czech to post another win and stay unbeaten since the start of the Rogers Cup tournament, contested in Montreal.
Kvitova squares off against the winner of the between Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Caroline Wozniacki which was stalled due to rain at the scores of 6-4 in favour of the Russian.
