Petra Kvitova outfoxes Alize Cornet to reach round three – US Open 2012
World number five, Petra Kvitova, trounced the 50th ranked French star, Alize Cornet, in the second round of the US Open Championship on the eve of Wednesday. She clinched the win in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Nerves were clearly there in the first half hour of the match from the Czech number one. However, as she grew into the encounter, she found solace and form; hitting the returns at her will and making life difficult for her opponent.
The Czech shot up the match proceedings with a serve hold and her opponent followed up. Both players were nervous at the starting phase of the play but did well to capitalize on their serves and keep the scores together. No damage
was done at either end until the end of the first six games as the scores moved to 3-3.
However, a trade of breakpoints in the following two games put some life into the match and ignited the interest of the spectators, who looked sleepy due to the conventional style of play. Kvitova held her serve in commanding fashion
and transferred the pressure back on her rival.
Cornet had to hold her serve to keep the set alive but she failed to do so; losing out the first two points that was a good enough initiative for the former Wimbledon Champion to capitalize and steal the opening set victory.
The second set started in emphatic fashion for the Czech. She held her serve with no problem at all and converted the allotted breakpoint in the following game to take a lead of 2-0. It was mandatory for Kvitova to stamp her authority
early in the second set that will thump her opponent in the discomfort zone.
Cornet failed to reply back; although did well to hang on to her serves but couldn’t find an opening to break serve back and equalize the scores. She lost the encounter after a respective fight.
Another Frenchwoman, Pauline Parmentier, will be up against the in-form Czech superstar who is on course to another Grand Slam title at New York.
