Petra Kvitova outmuscles Petra Martic to reach the semis – BNP Paribas Katowice Open 2013
World number eight, Petra Kvitova, avenged her last year’s lost at the hands of the Croatian underdog, Petra Martic, by defeating her in the quarter-final round of BNP Paribas Katowice Open on Friday. The top seeded Czech beauty
took merely 69 minutes to wrap up the contest in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, marching her way into the semi-final round of the inaugural edition of this WTA event in Katowice, Poland.
It was a completely one-sided contest, with Kvitova dictating the entire show. She suffered a 4-6, 4-6, loss from Martic last year in Tokyo, Japan, but returned the favour this time round to level the head-to-head series at 1-1.
The 23-year-old displayed her true form and kept winning the crucial points on regular occasions to come out as the dominating winner. She spared merely five games for the 91st ranked Croatian and didn’t allow her any chance to get the upper hand
in the match.
"I think today I played my best match here," Kvitova said. "It was a special feeling to play so well and feel so comfortable on the court. And more importantly I played well on the important points, which was good because she serving
so well, I really had to wait for the right moments to break her serve. Every match helps me get the feel for the ground and the balls and the clay. I think that's very important for me for this week and for the whole clay court season."
The contest took off in a steady manner, with no break points being witnessed in the opening five games of the match. Kvitova delivered the first blow in the sixth game and capitalized upon it with a successful serve hold to impose
a 5-2 lead over the young Croat. She had no troubles in serving out of the first set at 5-3.
The top seeded Czech carried on her winning impetus in the following set and broke her opponent in the very first game to lead 2-0. Martic held her next two serves but Kvitova nailed another crucial break point in the seventh game
and went on to conclude her victory at 6-2.
