Petra Kvitova outmuscles Sara Errani to claim the title – Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2013
Czech beauty, Petra Kvitova, claimed her 10 WTA championship title by outplaying the Italian number one, Sara Errani, in the final of Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Saturday. The sixth seeded left-hander had to dig deep
in the contest before settling the final score line at 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, to be crowned as the ultimate champion in Dubai, UAE.
Kvitova improved one spot in the WTA premier Rankings after her championship victory over Errani. She was rated at number eight at the start of the season but now confidently holds the seventh spot after registering her 12th
victory of the running professional circuit.
The Czech contender was anticipated as the hot favourite for winning the Dubai title, as she had won all the previous encounters against Errani. Kvitova defeated the Italian top-tenner three times in straight sets prior to the
Saturday’s final and sustained her clean sheet in the end to mark a 4-0 lead in the head-to-head series.
Kvitova was off to a brilliant start in the final, blasting her way through the opening set with ease. She spared merely two games for Errani and took the set at 6-2 to get into the driving seat. It was expected that she will wrap
up the proceedings in the second set but the fifth seeded Italian wouldn’t let it happen that easily. Errani came out firing in the second set and registered a breadstick to mark her presence in the contest. However, she completely ran out of steam in the
decisive set, letting Kvitova to register a 6-1 score line to conclude her triumph in style.
"I knew I had to keep fighting for every ball, because she was really on fire in the second set and continued that in the third too," Kvitova said in the post match review. "I was just thinking to not give up and just fight for
every point. When it was 2-1 and she missed a volley, and I think that was a turning point for me. I was quite down after the second set. I just tried to stay positive and just play."
Errani has slipped to the eighth spot in the WTA Premier Rankings after her loss while Kvitova replaces her for the world number seven rank.
