Petra Kvitova outshines Rebecca Marino in opening round – Generali Ladies Linz 2011
2011 Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova made a great start to her campaign at Generali Ladies Linz 2011 as she eased past Canadian tennis pro Rebecca Marino 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday to book her place in the second round here in Austria.
Top seeded at the Women’s Tennis Association tournament, Kvitova entered the competition as a wild card. She certainly justified her seed in her opening match as she required only 54 minutes dispatching her opponent. The Czech
blasted her big forehand and backhand winners all over the court as she made the challenger run for her money.
Kvitova possesses a very powerful backhand shot, which she uses frequently to surprise her opponents. In addition to her strong ground strokes, she can serve with control and accuracy. Kvitova is having a dream time on the tour
this season. Following her consistence performances at the international, she had now climbed to world number in world rankings.
Having won her first ever Grand Slam title at the All England Lawn Club, she is looking confident and stronger than ever before. If she can maintain her impressive form for the entire next week, she is certainly on her way to claim
her fifth WTA title of the season.
Breaking Marino twice in each set, Kvitova looked in complete control of the situation. Hitting four blazing serve aces, she earned valuable points at crucial stages of the game. Looking in commanding form, Kvitova will be hoping
to continue her impressive run into the next round as well to enter the round of eight.
Marino will be looking to learn from her mistakes and come back stronger on her next WTA appearance. Making unforced errors regularly, she did not give herself a chance to stay in the match. Hitting only a mere 50 per cent first
serves, she was always fighting a lost battle. Ranked 59th in the world, Marino is a fresh talent in women’s tennis world. Although she is out of the tournament now, she would have learnt her lessons from a quality player like Kvitova.
The Czech, Kvitova made a great start to the match as she forced errors from her opponent with her strong ground play. Breaking the serve twice, she raced to an impassable game score lead. Closing out the set easily, she took the
set score lead 1-0.
The second set followed a pretty similar fashion as Kvitova broke Marino twice more to give herself a chance of ending the match in straight sets. She then converted the very first match point to move ahead at the WTA tournament.
