Petra Kvitova overcomes Stefanie Voegele in the second round clash – Open GDF Suez 2013
World number eight, Petra Kvitova, had a bit rough ride before registering her first victory at 2013 Open GDF Suez tournament on Wednesday. The second seeded Czech diva outplayed the Swiss qualifier, Stefanie Voegele, in straight
sets, 7-6(5), 6-3, to book a spot in the quarter-final round of the WTA Premier event in Paris, France.
Although Kvitova won the contest in straight sets, she wasn’t playing her best tennis at all. Her second round loss to the British teenager, Laura Robson, at the Australian Open appears to be still fresh in her mind. The second
seeded Czech didn’t go for aggressive game plan but was seen on the defensive mode, especially in the opening set. Kvitova received a stiff resistance from the Swiss underdog but her experience came handy. She manoeuvred her way through the opening set but
then cruised through the following one to register her third victory of the 2013 WTA season.
"I knew how I had to play and that's why I served well in the beginning - that was the key to the match," Kvitova said in her post match reviews. "I knew she would keep fighting, she's a tough player, and it's always tough to play
her. I'm just happy I kept playing my game and won today, because she was playing very well."
The eighth ranked Czech was off to a flyer in the opener, nailing two successive breaks of serve to mount a 4-0 lead in no time. However, her momentum was halted in the sixth game when Voegele broke her for the first time. The
talented Swiss stung her second break point of the day in the 10th game and levelled the score line to 5-5. Subsequently, a tie-breaker round came into play when the scores were deadlocked at 6-6. The decider also went to the wire but it was Kvitova
who stood above Voegele in the end, bagging the opening set at 7-6(7).
Two more breaks of serve in the second and the sixth games of the following set propelled Kvitova to the match point in the 84th minute. She comprehensively took the set at 6-3 to register her third victory of the 2013
WTA season.
