Petra Kvitova ready to defend her title at Wimbledon – Tennis News
World number four, Petra Kvitova, feels no pressure on entering the Wimbledon Grand Slam as a defending champion. Her title defence will start next week at the grass courts of London. Talking about the year’s third Major Championship,
the Czech youngster stated, “The pressure is there and it’s normal, but without pressure it would be boring. The expectation is big, but I’m glad that my team and I are not really thinking about the pressure too much."
She has a unique record of becoming the fourth ever left-handed player to grab a Grand Slam Championship. She created a name for herself at the professional circuit and cruised into the Top-5 players of the world. She was expected
to be the next number one after the controversial reign of the 21-year-old Dane, Caroline Wozniacki. However, her dismal form this year was the biggest disappointment for her fans across the globe. She hasn’t been able to put her hands on any title this season.
She further added about her last year’s campaign, “After Wimbledon, I didn’t have good matches and good results. But I think that it’s normal because it’s the first time and everything is new and it’s a new experience. Life changed
too. I had a lot of media stuff to do and sponsors, and people recognised me everywhere, so it’s not easy. But anyway, it’s the good part of our tennis life."
Kvitova was residing at the seaside of Eastbourne for the Wimbledon warm-up tournament where she was the runners-up last year. She lost to the French number one, Marion Bartoli, in the previous edition of the tournament. Despite
a lot of criticism on her poor performance, she has a straight forward mindset for every tournament; to go out there and play the best possible tennis she can. She was semi-finalist on three different occurrences this year; losing out to the former French
Open champion, Li Na, in Apia Sydney International and bowing out to the newly ranked Russian world number one, Maria Sharapova, in Australian Open, Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and the French Open. The Russian beauty queen will be her biggest challenge at Wimbledon
as well; if they face-off for the fourth time in the season.
The Czech starlet considers Sharapova to be the hot favourite contestant for the title. However, she still believes that she can discover her sublime form and repeat the last year’s heroics to retain her Grand Slam title.
