Petra Kvitova shuts the door on Agnieszka Radwanska in 3rd RR match – WTA Championships 2011
Petra Kvitova slammed the door on Agnieszka Radwanska in the third Round Robin match at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011.
This year’s Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova quenched Agnieszka Radwanska's desire to make it to the semi finals of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011, with a sudden first set comeback, winning in straight sets of 7-6(4),
6-3 to finish first in the Red Group and also brought Vera Zvonareva along with her into the final four.
The first set of the match was initiated by Radwanska and the both the players held their service games to place each other at 1-1. It was in the fourth and the sixth game that Radwanska capitalized on a break point and had taken
a 5-1 lead against Kvitova.
However, Kvitova suddenly came alive and made a marvellous return by bagging straight four games to tie the score at 5-5 and then at 6-6. Eventually the score was pushed in to a tie breaker. Amidst the tie breaker, her power game
hit the mark as she took a lead of 4-0 in the tie break. With a series of breaks and holds took the opening set comfortably by clinching a 7-4 victory and was now one up in the match.
The second set of the match was a much easier feat for Kvitova as she stayed extremely focused and calm throughout the set. Kvitova was in complete control of the set and initiated the second set by reeling straight two games against
Radwanska. However, the Pole broke back and with a hold of serve tied the score at 2-2 and then 3-3 by the end of the sixth game.
During the seventh game the two challengers battled six marathon deuces before Kvitova held her game at 4-3. Current Wimbledon Champion Kvitova never really looked in a hitch again and by capitalizing on the second break point
opportunity, she eventually finished the match with a big crosscourt forehand finish in simply one hour and forty two minutes on the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey.
After her win Kvitova said, “When I started today I was a bit confused. I didn't know what to do and was surprised Aga was moving so well. Luckily I was able to refocus and the atmosphere today was unbelievable - the people who
came today were great, I hope they can come tomorrow too."
The Czech finished first in the Red Group with a quick 3-0 win-loss and 6-0 in sets and was able to reserve a spot in the semi final of the event where she will be facing Samantha Stosur.
