Petra Kvitova speaks about her performance in the current season – Tennis News
World number six, Petra Kvitova, is definitely unable to discover the emphatic run of form that helped her to break through the top ranks of the world and grab a Grand Slam title at Wimbledon Championships. She reached as far as world number two and had an opportunity to claim the top ranked spot in the Australian Open. However, she squandered that opportunity; lost to the Russian superstar, Maria Sharapova, in the semi-final and that marked the downfall of Kvitova.
In an interview before the start of the Women Tennis Association Championship at Istanbul, Kvitova said, “I knew this season would be tough for me after the breakthrough last season. It's always going to be a little bit different every season we play.”
She further added, “I had some injuries and illness this year but I'm glad the way I played otherwise and it means a lot to be here again. I hope when I step on the court again it will bring everything back and I will try to have nice memories from this year too.”
It is a sorrow looking stats corner for Kvitova this season. She has clinched 49 victories from her 64 clashes and amongst those 15 losses some of them have been very cheap. In the BNP Paribas Open, Christina McHale ousted the 22-year-old Czech in the third round. Lucie Hradecka, Petra Martic, Ekaterina Makarova and Carla Suarez Navarro are the two underdogs that have registered wins against the left-handed Istanbul qualifier.
Importantly for the Czech star, she has grabbed two titles before entering the TED BNP WTA Championship in Istanbul. She outplayed the Chinese number one, Li Na, in the final of the Rogers Cup at Montreal to open her account of 2012 and doubled it with a marvellous triumph in the New Haven Open at Yale.
Moreover, the Czech star is the defending champion at year-end finale. Talking about the tour of Istanbul, she said, “You can't choose who can be in your group. All eight players are great players who have had a great season. I'll try my best.” We will have to wait and see if the best of Kvitova is good enough for the retention of the title.
